Are you transferring into a new home with slightly terrible locks?

Lock installation is an easy process that you can do.

If you are already familiar with the locks, you can begin the installation process already.

If not, we will help you get to know them or contact us for assistance.

Most doors already have holes for pre-drilled locks.

To continue drilling these partial holes, you should be aware of the lock’s sizes to take appropriate measures and avoid repeating the process.

Here are the ways on how to conduct lock installation on your own.

    Latch Bolt Locks

For the latch bolt locks, there are only a few steps to follow.

The drilling of holes will require measuring and marking the door.

First, find the area where you will place the handle.

Mark these points in a square using a pencil or any other material for tracing.

Note that the first hole to drill is meant for the latch.

Also, it is necessary to locate the door edge’s center part that diverges from the points across the door.

By doing this, you will have smooth drilling with a spade bit.

    Next, measure the lock’s backset.

On the drill bit’s head, follow and add the corresponding length or add +2mm for allowance.

For further information, most residential doors have 2 ⅜ or 2 ¾ backsets.

Make sure to know the exact measurement of the backset to avoid overboard drilling.

After the depth of the latch has been drilled, use your chisel to proper the shape to fit the lock into the door.

This chiseling out is similar to the plate surrounding the bolt.

To continue, upon confirming that the required holes for latch’s depth have been made, drill the holes for the knobs and levers on both sides.

Please remember that it varies depending on the type of door handle.

After the hole-drilling process, pass the spindle through the lock, then screw both interior and exterior sections.

Once done, focus on the strike for the lock.

Keep in mind to make the strike and the latch bolt lock at the same level.

It needs to be equal to ensure that it will rest flush within the strike upon closing.

    Deadbolt Locks

Deadbolt locks are easy to install on your own, or you can add them to your doors equipped with latch bolt locks.

These locks are designed to make the door more secure.

Get your necessary equipment, especially a hole saw, and let’s start the lock installation process.

Upon preparing the hole saw, make sure that its size matches the lock’s size.

Now, outline the starting points where they should be put and mark them for guidance.

Drill through one side halfway through and entirely on the opposite side.

Through this, the sawing process will be more straightforward and lessens the risk of destroying the door.

For the next process, drill a hole through the edge with a spade bit to fit the latch in it.

Clean these holes afterward by chiseling the edges.

Please do not skip this part because it ensures that it perfectly fits within the door.

Once done smoothing it out, insert the latch through the edge and screw it.

We are almost done with the lock installation process; hang in there!

Make sure that the bolt can be retracted and extended before placing the lock’s case and tailpiece through the latch.

For the last part, drill a hole into the doorframe to place the strike plate.

Ensure that the depth of the hole matches the deadbolt’s throw.

Screw the strike plate and ensure that the cylinder’s tailpiece in the collar is appropriately placed inside the lock.

Also, the turn knob bolts should be exactly lined up on the opposite side.

Essentially, the internal parts must be parallel to each other to allow the lock to work smoothly.

Test the lock if it works just as planned.
