Deadbolt is known for providing a high level of security in your home.
Besides its quality, it is the easiest and cheapest way to improve home protection.
While other security systems like the automated ones, installing a deadbolt is still suggested.
With assistance from professional locksmiths like us, deadbolt installation can be done quickly.
However, if you prefer to install it yourself, here are the steps we recommend you to follow.
1. Locate the ideal location
First, what you need to do is determine the perfect location to place the deadbolt.
Its measurement is usually around 6” to 12” inches right above the lock.
Use a tape measure and pick the best spot, then mark it.
Afterward, get your speed square and trace a straight line using your pencil.
It should start from the mark point to the door’s side.
Now, continue to trace the line onto both faces of the door, front and back.
The line should only run in uniform around the door.
2. Mark the points
From the edge, mark each side of the door specifically on 2-3/8″ or 2-¾.″
Please do note that the measurement varies on the latch bolt’s length.
To be more specific, you can check the manufacturer’s guide for reference.
Going back, mark the midpoint on the door’s edge, making it three marks in total.
Proceed to drill these three marks.
The first hole is meant for the cylinder.
Drill an inch deep, then onto the other side, drill the exact measurement again.
Do this process as smoothly as possible; the circular hole should be clean and visible from both sides.
3. Choose the faceplate
Choose the faceplate included in the lock parts you purchased.
Complement the faceplate’s hole and the drilled hole on the edge.
Keep holding it in place while tracing it around using your pencil.
Then, get a 1” chisel and drill a ⅛ deep within the one you traced.
Now that both the bold and faceplate are attached, install them at the same time.
Upon knowing the more accurate side-up, put the bolt through the latch hole.
This way, the faceplate will be flushed on the door’s edge, assuming you have mortised it perfectly.
To secure it, mount the screws before the key cylinder.
Afterward, slide the cylinder into the place through a bigger hole on the door’s face.
Remember to fit the cylinder’s tailpiece through the bolt’s holes.
Once assured that it is correctly positioned, you can now screw the cylinder.
Repeat the ways on the other half.
4. Activate the bolt
You have now reached the final step of the deadbolt installation.
After the drilling, try to lock and unlock it a few times to know if it’s working, how far it can go.
Mark the point on the door jamb right exactly where the bolt hits.
Use a 1” spade bit to drill a hole for the bolt.
Now observe the other unused lock parts.
Notice that the strike plate should be included in the last remaining.
Fit the strike plate over the hole, then trace it.
Similar to the faceplate you followed in the third step, chisel a ⅛ deep mortise.
Next, place the strike plate, flushing it with the jamb, then fasten it with screws.
5. Test the door.
After doing all the steps above, test the door.
Do it a couple of times to ensure that it is properly working.
If victorious, you can finally rest and enjoy your hard work.
However, if not, follow the steps again.
Still, if it does not work, maybe it is time to call for professional assistance.
There is a high tendency that you made a slight mistake or you missed some steps.
